The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), with the support of the European Commission's Euroclima program, has published the novel Analysis and Proposals for Electric Public Transportation from a Gender Perspective study. The document emphasizes the urgent need to transform public transport network in Latin America, with the main focus being the importance of incorporating a gender perspective in its planning and operation.

A New Vision for Urban Mobility

The study highlights that, in order to make public transport systems more inclusive and sustainable, it is essential to take into account travel patterns in women's daily lives. In the context of challenges facing the 2030 Agenda, teh gender approach is presented as a key tool to promote inclusion and innovation in urban mobility. This approach not only seeks equality in access and usage of public transportation, but also the active participation of women in the transportation industry.

Important Findings and Proposals for Action

The document highlights the need to include gender perspective in public transportation polices, creating norms that promote equality and the implementation of education and training programs that empower women in the sector. ECLAC says that technical and technological training, especially in areas such as driving, is a major help in promoting women's participation in the public transportation industry, thus contributing to its modernization.

Successful examples of this strategy can be seen in the advances of electromobility in public transport in Chile and Colombia, where the incorporation of women has played a crucial role.

Innovation and Circular Economy

The importance of embracing the circular economy approach in the modernization of the public transport fleet is crucial. The creation of innovation clusters that promote sustainable and efficient measures is proposed, benefiting not only the environment, but also generating new economic opportunities for women.

In addition, the need for the transportation system to be more efficient and managed in a transparent manner is emphasized, ensuring that concessions and job opportunities are available to all.

A Call to Action

The document is a call to action for Latin American cities to take into account a more inclusive and sustainable approach in the development of their public transport systems. A more fair and sustainable future requires the incorporation of a gender perspective and the active participation of women in the region.
