In a world where cities face the challenge of balancing urban growth with environmental preservation, Mexico City (CDMX) is positioned as a pioneer in sustainability. The capital has an ambitious project to modernize its public markets through the implementation of solar energy systems, setting a previous experience in urban environmental management.

Through the Ministry of Economic Development (SEDECO), the CDMX has invested 20 million pesos since 2019 to install 13 photovoltaic systems in strategically selected markets in Milpa Alta, Gustavo A. Madero and Tlalpan, with four installations scheduled for 2024. This not only significantly reduces conventional energy consumption and CO2 emissions, but also, contributes to more responsible and environmentally friendly economic development.

These photovoltaic systems will allow markets to cover up to 95% of their energy needs with renewable sources. The annual reduction in CO2 emissions is estimated at 172 tons, an impact equivalent to the conservation of 430 Ayacahuite pines or the reduction in daily emissions of almost 9,000 cars. This not only optimizes the operating costs of the markets, but also reinforces the city's commitment to a sustainable future.

The transition towards clean energy in the public markets of the CDMX is not only a technical change, but also, a redefinition of the local economy under principles of sustainability. Markets are fundamental pillars of the city's social and economic fabric, that are now aligned with global emission reduction and environmental protection goals. Solar panels modernized the infrastructure of these supply centers, while reinforcing the commitment of the CDMX with an inclusive and ecologically responsible developments.

In addition to the investment in solar energy, the SEDECO has allocated more than 1.871 billion pesos for the rehabilitation of the city's 339 traditional public markets. These improvements include modernizing infrastructure, optimizing security, and increasing convenience for merchants and consumers. With these investments, the CDMX not only seeks to preserve and revitalize these supply centers, but also, prepares them to face the challenges of the future in an ever-changing urban environment.

The administration of Mexico City has urged citizens to rediscover and support these markets, which now, have become standards of sustainability. The transformation of public markets through solar energy is an example of innovation that combines tradition and modernity, demonstrating that it is possible to move towards a greener future without sacrificing the city's cultural and economic identity.

In this context, sustainability is not only a slogan, but a comprehensive strategy that guides the development of Mexico City. Public markets, historically the heart of communities, are becoming pioneers in embracing sustainable practices. The implementation of solar energy in these spaces is tangible evidence of the city's commitment to an urban development model that prioritizes environmental well-being, social equity and long-term economic viability.

The commitment of the CDMX to renewable energy in its public markets not only benefits local merchants and consumers, but also, sends a clear message about the direction that urban policies must take to face the challenges of climate change. With these actions, Mexico City reaffirms its position as a committed metropolis to sustainability, innovation and leadership in the fight for a cleaner and fairer future.
