Heritage and inheritance: Cultural migration

Migration is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon; It is something implicit in the history and construction of humanity itself. By crossing the created borders, migrants enter into processes of construction of a new culture and consciousness, so “migration brings with it the expansion of the radius of social relations and the formation of new work, friendly or loving ties” (Chavez ,2022).

Nowadays, the person who arrives in a destination country experiences countless changes at a social and cultural level that influence their psychosocial acceptance "and even their readaptation to the society of origin when they have to return, either by choice." own or expulsion” (Ferrer,2014).

When moving to a new territory, the migrant brings with him his cultural baggage, language, knowledge and emotions. However, he must adapt these new expressions, culture, food and different ways of life to his new destination reality. It is a process where, if carried out in an organic and positive way, it is very interesting since, if it manages to adapt to the new social and cultural conditions of the destination country, it also contributes to the emergence of intercultural mixtures that end up reforming identities and proposing other ways of life. in that permanent cycle that has occurred since all time.

The intercultural mix can be evidenced, for example, in the impact of gastronomy on new cultures, such as the case of China, which has an impact with the emergence and distribution of oriental products in Western everyday life as a result of the presence of Chinese communities that install restaurants and /or ventures as ways to build their economies at destination points; and even contact sports such as martial arts that are increasingly popular in many European countries and in America in general. This is also the case of the Latin presence in other latitudes where their workforce is a fundamental pillar of the economies in the USA and has been relevant in the construction of Europe.

It is surprising the human ability to advance and get ahead by enhancing those qualities and knowledge that they carry with them, ensuring that their “weaknesses” such as language, food or culture are consolidated into strengths to be included in new contexts. This is how they take advantage of those exotic and striking elements for the native as an opportunity by contributing new ideas and innovations.

Migratory culture is by definition heritage in motion since through the displacement of people, value is created through comprehensive solutions that energize economies, rebuild the social fabric and generate opportunities that dignify individuals and at the same time provide protection of knowledge, traditions and innate knowledge of the people, although it is often required to adapt to a new country and for the individual to modify their behavior and mold themselves to a new culture, starting with learning a new foreign language (or at least understanding a new accent).

It could be said that the process that the migrant goes through is conditioned by their needs and by the new context that experiences changes in “their physical safety, health, leisure, work and establishing interpersonal relationships, which will be achieved with greater or lesser difficulty according to the degree of cultural difference between the host society and the one of origin, and also requires that the immigrant have a good ability to overcome physical and psychological discomfort” (Ferrer,2014). In short, people who decide to migrate must be willing to overcome the obstacles that arise and turn their weaknesses into strengths, thus providing added value to the host country without leaving their culture behind or disparaging the other.
