Burning brightly: A growing climate emergency

On July 27, the UN Secretary General warned us about climate change in a conference organized for the press and different media.

“Climate change is here, it is terrifying and it is just the beginning. The era of global warming is over, the era of climate boiling has begun.

The air is unbreathable, the heat is unbearable and the level of profits from fossil fuels and climate inaction is unacceptable,” declared the Secretary.

In recent days, the Climate Change Service and the World Meteorological Organization have recorded the highest temperatures in the world. Putting the month of July 2023, with three consecutive weeks, as the hottest in the history of humanity.

“It is still possible to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius and avoid the worst of climate change but only with dramatic and immediate action” so decreed Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the UN.

What is happening to the planet?

High temperatures, droughts, fires, deforestation, melting glaciers, floods, heat and cold waves have been documented for some time, which have seriously affected different sectors and countries around the world, especially in Latin America.

“Leaders must lead, no more doubts, no more excuses, no more waiting for others to act first, there is simply no more time for that,” said Antonio Guterres.

Although this is a global climate emergency, we are talking about Latin America because several of the least developed countries there are the ones that suffer the most from the impacts, since they have less capacity to adapt and this can be caused by the lack of resources and diversification. of the same ones they have to generate economic income and even food.

It is important to highlight and understand that these situations impact both the health and the economy of the countries and the environment.

Polluted oceans, cut down forests, destroyed cities, scarce flora and fauna and maximum exploitation of our natural resources are some of the problems that end in visible consequences. For example, fishing nets sunk in the sea, sedimentation of microplastics in lagoons and beaches, among others.

This global warming generates water scarcity in some places. The possibility of cultivation is affected, because the land can overheat and this does not allow plantations. What can cause fires that lead to migration or displacement of families, there can also be numerous economic, cultural and even heritage losses.

There are scientists who claim that humans are to blame for all these events. There are people who fear for their future, for the future of the planet and even do not want to bring more life to the world because they do not know what will happen.

There are people who claim that if each person adopts small healthier and more sustainable habits such as plastic waste, little water use, among others, we could stop all this global madness.

Positive advances and launches of sustainable resources are there. We must promote change to lower the alert and slow down the process, we must work hard and among all inhabitants to generate a positive impact.
