Why can migrants become a factor and actor in development?

By Valentina Rodriguez Tamayo

Migration is a positive and natural factor that has existed since the beginning of human history. There are many factors that influence the decision to migrate, whether it is having better economic opportunities, studying, escaping conflicts, abuses or natural disasters. International organizations such as the ILO and IOM demonstrated that the search for a better quality of life and optimal working conditions are the main factors, so migration must be seen as a constant factor in the global economic system.

All migrants are agents of change to the extent that they can contribute to development through the use and generation of beneficial resources. Migration has exit and entry, and when many migrants return to their place of origin they arrive with an infinite amount of new and valuable knowledge that, thanks to the experience they acquired abroad, they can take advantage of by starting work ventures, social work, impacting society with multiplier effects. and increase sustainable local development. According to the United Nations, in 2019 the number of international migrants was 272 million worldwide and one in thirty people is a migrant, which indicates that with so many human beings on the move, there must be new ways to consider the positive impact of migration. reinforcing the value of cultures and the link with human rights. Migrants have higher levels of education than those who do not migrate in their communities, so they help increase academic degrees, reduce infant mortality, crime rates and are very important within the national economy through the hand of work they contribute.

This development opens up new possibilities: going beyond the work of caring for immigrants in their territories, expanding the action abroad, learning from neighboring cultures, studying the roots of this culture and taking everything good, wonderful and positive that it has. to offer. Migrants are human beings who travel with dreams, hopes and desires. If they favor the host country so much, why don't we help them too? Let's build inclusive societies, a world where there are no borders and let's respect the rights of each person based on love, empathy and solidarity. We should not fear immigrants, we should fear prejudices.
